Regulations on Female Students Going on Scientific Trips
Fatwa No: 13456

Question

I am a female student in my third year in the faculty of Geology. We sometimes go on scientific trips, but only I and another girl accompany male students and professors. What is the Sharee‘ah ruling on partaking in these trips? May Allaah reward you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Female students are permitted to go on scientific trips  under certain conditions:

First: The trip should not be for long distances for which a Mahram (non-marriageable male) is required.

Second: There must be no meetings in seclusion with non-Mahram (marriageable) men.

Third: There must be no unlawful intermixing between the two sexes.

Fourth: Both should be safe from any possible temptation.

Fifth: The trip should be free from prohibited acts such as looking at forbidden things, shaking hands with the opposite sex, softening one's speech or talking idly. All these acts are not allowed with non-Mahram men.

If these conditions are met, it is permissible to take part in such trips. Otherwise, it is impermissible.

Allaah Knows best.
