Question

Assalamu Alaykum I was told there are a total of 500 verses in the Qu'ran about Halal and Haram. Is that correct? If it is, can you list them for me. Insha Allah, I would like to study them. Jazhak Allahu khayran

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we say that what the scholars mean by the verses on legal rulings (Ahkaam, or what is Halaal and Haraam) are the verses that comprise Fiqh rulings, whether they are explicitly mentioned in or deduced from the verses.

As regards their number, a group of scholars stated that there are 500 verses on legal rulings as mentioned by As-Suyooti in Al-Itqaan, by Ibn al-Qayyim in Madaarij As-Saalikeen, and by other scholars.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah said: “...and they are about five hundred verses.” [End of quote]

Many scholars have interpreted these verses in separate books; among them are Al-Jassaas from the Hanafi School, Ibn Al-‘Arabi from the Maaliki School, El-Kiya al-Hirraasi from the Shaafi‘i School, and others.

As regards your request that we list these verses, then this is not an easy matter as the answer will be too long, so you may refer to the books about the verses on legal rulings. Islamweb site is specialized in giving prompt answers to the questioners who need Fatwa.
