Wind Is a Manifestation of The Mercy or Punishment of Allah
Fatwa No: 414883

Assalamoaliakum, sir pls I am having extreme trouble. Please help me. I read one Hadith that don't say anything bad to wind ( air). Now I am having confusion is it Allah ( May Allah forgive me). Is air the creation of Allah? Should I consider air the creation of Allah just like time? Pls let me know.

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is forbidden to curse the wind because it is the creation of Allah, The Almighty, just like everything else. Allah imparted to it whatever characteristics He wills, and it obeys His Command. It was narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Do not curse the wind, for it is from the Rawh of Allah, bringing mercy or destruction, but ask Allah for its goodness, and seek refuge with Allah from its evil.” [Ahmad in Al-Musnad, At-Tirmithi, and Ibn Maajah]

The Arabic term ‘Rawh’ used in the Hadeeth means the Mercy of Allah, The Exalted (It is not ‘Rooh’, which means soul or spirit). It was also used in the verse that reads (what means): {…and despair not of Rawh from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of Rawh from Allah except the disbelieving people."} [Quran 12:87] In this verse, the word Rawh is translated as mercy or relief of Allah, The Exalted. Similarly, Allah, The Exalted, Says (what means): {And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah, * Then [for him is] Rawh and bounty and a garden of pleasure.} [Quran 56:88-89] The term Rawh, here translated as mercy and comfort. Hence, describing the wind as being from the ‘Rawh’ of Allah means that it is a manifestation of His Mercy.

There is no doubt that the wind is one of the creations of Allah, The Almighty, and He controls it. He sends it as punishment to whomever He wills and as mercy to whomever He wills. At the command of its Lord, the wind was sent as punishment for the People of ‘Aad when they disbelieved in His Messenger, Prophet Hoode (Hud), may Allah exalt his mention, and it destroyed them. Allah, The Exalted, Says (what means): {…a wind, within it a painful punishment, * Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus, do We recompense the criminal people.} [Quran 46:24-25]

In the verse, it is stated that the wind destroyed them at the command of Allah, The Exalted. Being the Lord of the wind means its Creator, Owner, and Controller. In another verse, Allah, The Exalted, Says (what means): {And in ‘Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind. * It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.} [Quran 51: 41-42] The barren wind is the one that brings no good or blessings. It does not pollinate the trees nor bear rain, but it is only a means of destruction.

The wind may also be sent as good tidings heralding the Mercy of Allah, The Exalted, as stated in the verse (which means): {And it is He Who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus, will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.} [Quran 7:57] Allah, The Exalted, also sends the wind as a means to pollinate the trees. He Says (what means): {And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.} [Quran 15:22] Allah subjected the wind to His Prophet Sulaymaan (Solomon) may Allaah exalt his mention. He Says (what means): {So, We subjected to him the wind blowing by his command, gently, wherever he directed.} [Quran 38:36] This is in addition to the other benefits of wind.
