Fatwa No: 293692

Question

I work for a software development company in software maintenance and support department as a software engineer. My question is my company is a general purpose software company in Australia(deals with mostly mining industry but any business can be our customer) but we do have some (less than 5%) customers who deal with alcohol products. My job is to fix the any software defects. Is my job permissible.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If your work in this company does not directly involve engaging in any prohibited acts or helping others to engage in them, then there is no blame on you for working in this company and using the money earned from it. The fact that some of the clients of the company are involved in prohibited activities such as selling alcohol and the like does not affect the permissibility of working in this company unless you are directly involved in prohibited activities as is the case if you conduct maintenance of the software of an alcohol factory, for instance. Allaah The Exalted says (what means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.} [Quran 5:2]

Allaah Knows best.
