Fatwa No: 526231

Question

Assalamu Alaykum. I came across a video that says the souce of this ingredient Mono and diglycerides as well as monoglycerides in foods can come from vegetables oils ( which is more common) or animal fat.(scared of pork) I started to get worried because I have foods in my house that contain these ingredients. Now I keep calling the companies on where I got them to investigate the source. If a souce is unknown, am I allowed to get eat it or throw everything I have in my house with this in it ?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

What you have mentioned appears to be nothing more than baseless misgivings (waswasah), which should be ignored and not given any attention.

It is not prescribed for you to investigate and examine the ingredients of food without a valid reason. The basic principle regarding food is that it is lawful and permissible.

A Jewish woman once gifted the Prophet, ﷺ, a roasted sheep, as reported by Abu Dawud and others and he did not ask whether it was lawful or not.

It is also mentioned in al-Muwatta’ that ʿUmar once went out with a group that included ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs until they came to a pool of water. ʿAmr said to the owner of the pool source: “O owner of the pool, do wild beasts drink from your water?ʿUmar said: “O owner of the pool, do not inform us about your water...” (The hadith continues.)

Allah Knows best.
