Learning does not justify watching pornographic movies
Fatwa No: 54109

Question

I am a recently married woman. Before marriage, I watched some pornographic movies to know some matters about the sexual relation. Am I guilty for this? What is the Sharee‘ah ruling on this? May Allaah Reward you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Allaah The Almighty Forbade looking at what is prohibited to be looked at. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allaah Is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts.} [Quran 24: 30-30]

Watching pornographic movies which reveal men’s and women's ‘Awrah is prohibited. Learning some matters about the sexual relation does not justify this action. Alternatively, one can review the books of Sunnah, Fiqh, and so on.

Consequently, you have committed a grave sin. But if you regretted that sin and you want to repent, then Allaah Forgives all sins. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means):

·    {But indeed, I Am The Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.} [Quran 20: 82]

·    {Say, “O My Servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the Mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah Forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He Who Is The Forgiving, The Merciful.”} [Quran 39: 53]

In a Hadeeth, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “The one who repents of a sin is like the one who did not commit a sin.” [Ibn Maajah]

For repentance to be accepted, one has to give up acts of disobedience, regret his past sins and determine not to repeat such sins again.

Allaah Knows best.
