Question

I'm a Pakistani student in Romania studying dentistry. There are two converted Muslims from Christianity, both are Romanians. One woman is a widow, her name is Fatimah and her daughter who is 19, studying in law school, her name is Najwa. Both became Muslim last October Fatimah and Najwa in 1st of Ramaza. I want to ask it I have a right to marry (Najwa)? Is it important to have permission from my parents? Najwa's mother (Fatimah) is agreed to let her daughter marry. My mother is also agreed formes to marry her, but my father is 50-50. And wants to visit me in Romania to see her himself Insh Allah, do I have a right to impose on him to cooperate and sign on my Nikah papers as a guardian or as a witness? My reason to marry her is that she and her mother trust me, and if I leave them due to my father's refusal, where will Najwa go? My choice is to marry her and please Allah. Being a student I can't give her money on the marriage. What I'll give her? Because I'm depending on my father's money? Please answer me quick I'm worried.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Children should obey their parents. This obedience includes all aspects of life. Since marriage is a decisive turning point in the person's life, you should seek your parents' advice as in choosing the woman who will be your wife, who will be the mother of your children, and hence, will have a special relation with your father and mother. This does not mean that the man needs a guardian like the woman, neither does it mean that one of the two witnesses should be the man's father. This is, as we mentioned earlier, part of obedience, good deeds and pleasing of one's parents.

So, we believe that you should talk to your father about your marriage explaining to him the reasons of your marriage to that girl even if this requires his coming to Romania to visit you and her. But the most important thing is that you should be prepared to listen to him and accept his opinion and act according to it. Know that the father is very keen on achieving the well being to his children and he has more experience than you. But if you happen to marry this girl, do your best to strengthen your matrimonial relation with her and to teach her Islam. Behave with her in an Islamic way, so that her heart becomes more lenient to Islam, her new religion.

Allah knows best.
