Proper use of company-issued items
Fatwa No: 87425

Question

We work for a company that provides toiletries like soaps, towels, etc. on their remote site away from main cities. These items are provided for personal use and issued to individuals without any accounting. Can an individual take the items like soaps and towels which he does not use during his stay at the work site to his home? Similarly, we are given milk packets for drinking at night and morning in whatever quantity we want. If one takes two packets at night and two in the morning and only consumes one at both times and saves two packets, can he take the other milk packets to his home?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

If the company has allotted its workers these items and given these workers these objects upon delivery, then the workers have the right to dispose of these things as they wish in any legal activity.  They can store them or take them home.

But, if the company sets a condition that the employee can take only what he needs for personal use and must return what remains, then it becomes unlawful for that person to take anything beyond his personal needs.

Allah knows best.
