Meaning of the Hadeeth,
Fatwa No: 8765

Question

It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention): said that there are three persons whose supplication is not answered: a husband who did not divorce his ill-mannered wife, a man who lent money to another without calling witnesses and a man who gave his money to a weak-minded person while Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And do not give the weak-minded your property.} [Quran 4:5]
Would you please provide the explanation of this Hadeeth?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The Hadeeth in question was narrated by Al-Haakim on the authority of Abu Moosaa Al-Ash‘ari who directly attributed it to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Al-Haakim also judged this Hadeeth as Saheeh (Authentic).

Al-Munaawi interpreted this Hadeeth saying that the supplication of the first man, who does not divorce his ill-mannered wife despite the fact that he has the ability to do so, is rejected because he has chosen to live with that woman who has made his life miserable; therefore, if he supplicates to Allaah The Almighty against her, his supplication will not be accepted.

The second man, who lends money to another without calling upon witnesses does not comply with the Quranic verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men.} [Quran 2:282] If the debtor denies that he has borrowed the money and the creditor supplicates against him, Allaah The Almighty will not answer his supplication.

The third person does not comply with the Quranic verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And do not give the weak-minded your property} [Quran 4:5] If the weak-minded person wastes the wealth and the owner supplicates against him, Allaah The Almighty will reject that supplication because he was responsible for the money being squandered.

Allaah Knows best.
