Question

I live in Pakistan. My husband works in Dubai therefore I am responsible for taking care of children and home.I have to go to market for shopping. Here in Pakistan all the shopkeepers are males. I am confident enough to buy anything but I am a little hesitant when I am buying undergarments . I have to tell shopkeepers my panty size and my bra size. My daughters are very shy so I have to buy undergarments for them as well. Am I allowed to buy such things by myself ?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is permissible for you, Allaah willing, to go to the market when necessary and buy underwear for you and your daughters, however, you should observe the religious requirements when talking to men, like wearing Hijab, observing a good moral conducts, observe bashfullness in your dealings, and not speaking with a soft voice or interact beyond the necessity, and you should observe other religious requirements which will help you protect your religion and dignity. This is of course if you have no Mahram (i.e. a spouse or a person whom one is permanently prohibited from marrying due to suckling, marital, or blood relations) who can do this for you.

May Allaah help you in becoming more pious, performing more acts of good deeds and more observing of the religious requirements.

Allaah Knows best.
