Fatwa No: 132449

Question

Sallamalikum iam 28 year old planning to go umra, i have not perform my aqeeqa , i wanted to ask wether it is must for me to do the aqeeqa first then do the umra

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

According to the preponderant opinion of the scholars ‘Umrah is an obligation once in a lifetime. Therefore, if you have not performed the obligatory ‘Umrah, you should take the initiative to perform it and not delay it.

As regards the ‘Aqeeqah, it is a Sunnah and not an obligation on the father (of the child) according to the view of the majority of the scholars . For more benefit, refer to Fatwa 89873. Moreover, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars about performing the ‘Aqeeqah for one’s own self whether or not it is desirable if it was not performed on his behalf when he was a child.

In any case, the ‘Aqeeqah does not come in priority over the ‘Umrah. Rather, you should perform the ‘Umrah first and then perform the ‘Aqeeqah for your own self if you wish as way of acting according to the scholars who are of the view that it is desirable to perform the ‘Aqeeqah on one’s own self.

Allaah Knows best.
