Assalaamu alaykum. What is the ruling on roleplaying between spouses to enhance one's sex life? Please elaborate.

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We did not find any statement for scholars about this matter in particular. However, they addressed a similar matter, namely that the husband has intercourse with his wife while imagining another woman. Some Shaafi‘i scholars held that this is forbidden. Al-‘Iraaqi wrote, “If a husband has intercourse with his wife while imagining having intercourse with another woman who is unlawful to him, then that is impermissible given its resemblance to adultery, and Allah knows best.” [Tarh At-Tathreeb]

It is better in any case to avoid such practices. There are many means by which the spouses can arouse one another, such as beautification, foreplay, kissing, and the like.
