The emergence of the Antichrist

Question

Who is the Antichrist?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The Antichrist is a man from the sons of Aadam whose distinctive characteristic is that he is one-eyed, with his right eye blind and his left eye sticking out like a floating grape. Between his two eyes the word “disbeliever” is written. He will manipulate reality by the will of Allaah.

Further descriptions can be inferred from the following Hadeeth,

Faatimah bint Qays may Allaah be pleased with her narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, once mounted the pulpit laughing, and after he had finished his prayer, he ordered everyone to remain where they had prayed. Then he pointed out that he had gathered them like this neither to encourage them to do something nor to forbid them from anything. He did this because Tameem Ad-Daari may Allaah be pleased with him who was a Christian, had embraced Islam and given the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, a report about the Antichrist that was similar to the one that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had given to his Companions before.

Tameem may Allaah be pleased with him told the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he and some 30 men from the Lakhm and Jithaam tribes had boarded a ship and that the sea had turned rough for a whole month. They headed for an island near sunset. When they landed on the island they met a furry beast, which told them that she spied and gathered information for the Antichrist. She ordered them to go to a man in a monastery. When they entered it, they found a giant man who was shackled. He told them that he was the Antichrist and that he was about to be given permission to emerge and roam the earth and enter every village and stay there for 40 nights, except Makkah and Madeenah - which would be prohibited for him. Whenever he would attempt to enter one of them he would be warded off by an angel carrying a sword, and there would be guarding angels at every entrance. [Muslim]

Huthayfah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he said that the Antichrist will carry water and fire: his fire is cold water, and his water is fire. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, advised Muslims not to destroy themselves by obeying him. [Muslim]

An-Nawwaas ibn Sam‘aan may Allaah be pleased with him narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he described the Antichrist as a young man with coarse hair and a protuberant eye. Anyone who meets him should read the first (ten) verses of Soorat Al-Kahf (chapter 18). The Antichrist will come to people, call them and they will respond to him. Afterwards, he will order the sky to rain for them and the soil to be fruitful. Thus their cattle will graze and become full of meat and milk.

He will also come to other people who will not respond to his call, so he will leave them and they will find their land barren and they will no longer have any of their wealth or property.

Moreover, he will pass a place of ruins and order it to give out its treasures which follow him like a swarm of bees. Then the Antichrist will call a young man and strike him with a sword and split him into two halves. Then he again will call the slain man who will (reassemble) and march to him with a radiant face. It is at that point Allaah The Almighty will send ‘Eesaa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary) may Allaah exalt his mention who will descend at the white minaret in the east of Damascus, and kill the Antichrist. [Muslim]

We supplicate to Allaah The Almighty to save us from the trial of the Antichrist.

And Allaah Knows best.
