Performing the funeral prayer at night

Question

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.
My question is regarding praying Janazah during the night time. Is it possible for the imam to perform the janazah night time and how will he do it? Did Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) (SAW) did janazah prayer in night time?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to perform the funeral prayer by night and there is nothing wrong in it and the companions may Allaah be pleased with them used to perform the funeral prayer on their dead during the night. The evidence about this is the narration in which the woman who used to sweep and clean the mosque died at night and in the morning the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was informed about her death and then he said: Why did you not let me know about her?”, then he went out to the graveyard with his companions may Allaah be pleased with them and he stood at her grave and he performed the funeral prayer on her and the people prayed behind him, and he supplicated for her and then he went away. This is evidence that she died and they performed the funeral prayer on her by night and they buried her by night.

The method of the funeral prayer during the night is exactly the same as the method of the funeral prayer during the day.

Allaah Knows best.
