Using a hair dye containing Vitis Vinifera

Question

Assalamu Alaykum, Is Vitis Vinifera halal? I found it in my hair dye.
If it is haram, will i have to cut my hair off?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Vitis Vinifera is composed of the European grapes extract or from this grape seed oil. If this is the case, then this does not necessarily turn it into alcohol for simply having been made from grapes.

Furthermore, if this substance was alcoholic and then it was added to the hair dye after being completely transformed to a non-intoxicating substance, then it is permissible to apply the hair dye. This is because an alcoholic substance that is transformed into another substance becomes a non-intoxicating substance, and thus the rulings of the intoxicating substances do not apply to it. This is if the transformation had taken place before that substance was mixed with another substance.

However, the following two matters should be noted:

First: In principle, all things are lawful and pure unless they are proven to be unlawful and impure with absolute certainty or a predominant thought.

Second: It is not permissible for men and women to dye their hair black, according to the preponderant opinion of scholars. However, if a person dyed his/her hair black they are not required to shave their hair, yet the dye must be removed if possible.

Allaah Knows best.
