Purification of an old ill person with broken legs

Question

assalamu aleykum! there is old ill person with broken legs..and this person is wearing pampers so that going to toilet is not available...because most of the time this person is lying in the bed...how can he pray? can he pray in pampers?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is well-known that purification from impurity is a prerequisite for the validity of prayer. But whoever is not able to purify himself from impurity due to illness or the like, and has no one to help him do so: if he can take off the dirty diaper and then pray, he may do so and pray; and if he cannot take it off and he fears that the due time of prayer would elapse before he finds someone to help him, he may pray in whatever state he is in, in view of the statement of Allaah The Almighty (which means): {Allaah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity.}[Quran 2:286] Also, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "…and if I order you to do something, do of it as much as is within your capacity." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The same applies to Wudoo’: if he is able to perform Wudoo’ by himself or with the aid of someone else, he may do so; and if he is unable to do so, and he has no one to help him, and he fears that the due time of prayer would elapse before he finds someone to help him, he may perform Tayammum; and if he is not able to, he may pray in whatever state he is in. Allaah Knows best.
