Making up prayer and fasting because of bleeding that accompanies abortion

Question

I experienced miscarriage in the first month of pregnancy during Ramadhaan but I did not realize the reason behind the bleeding so I considered it menstruation. Therefore, I abstained from fasting and offering the prayer for twelve days. Afterwards the doctor informed me that it was a miscarriage, not menstruation, so how can I make up the prayer? Can I make up one obligatory prayer with the same one on a daily basis?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If the miscarriage occurred before the creation of the fetus, it is considered as merely blood whose emergence implies no refrainment from fasting or offering prayer. Therefore, a woman who refrained from fasting and offering prayer because of bleeding that accompanied a miscarriage during the first month of pregnancy is obliged to make up fasting and prayers. Moreover, anyone who is obliged to make up prayer must make it up once he remembers or after the absence of obstructions. She has to make up all the missed prayers at once if possible. Otherwise she may make them according to her ability, either with other obligatory prayers or singled out.

Allaah Knows best.
