Interrupting Tawaaf and Sa‘y to offer prayer

Question

Out of ignorance of the fact that the prayer interrupts the round of Tawaaf (circumambulation), whenever I interrupted it for prayer, I would resume it from wherever I ended. This happened with me many times, of which I remember that I interrupted Tawaaf Al-Ifadhah for the Maghrib prayer and interrupted a round of Sa‘y (going back and forth) between Mount Safa and Mount Marwah for ‘Umrah in order to offer the Witr prayer behind the Imam. Please advise me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There is nothing wrong with interrupting Tawaaf or Sa‘y in order to offer the prayer. If the prayer is established and one is performing Tawaaf or doing Sa‘y, then let him pray with the congregation and complete his Tawaaf or Sa‘y from wherever he ended in the round in which he was. He is not required to repeat the round in which he was or his Tawaaf from the beginning. Furthermore, it is not due to do the rounds of Sa‘y consecutively.

Allaah Knows best.
