Wants to change his name ‘Waleed’

Question

Salaamu Alaykum Sheikh,
My name is Waleed and I am very much concern with it's attributes and implications on my personality. The meaning of Waleed is said to be baby or child, due to this meaning I feel myself being a weak and frail hearted person though my age is over 18 years.
Now I am very keen to change this name and replace it by keeping Muhsin instead.
Is namimg Muhsin affect my character [By the Will of ALLAH (The Almighty)]?
please Sheikh don't stuck me with other answers, may ALLAH (The Almighty) reward you with goodness.
Jazaak ALLAHu Khair.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to be named with the name Waleed and some Companions may Allaah be pleased with them had this name and it is not known that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) changed their names. Indeed, Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him entitled a Chapter “Naming a child with the name Waleed”. The scholars who interpreted this said that this means that this name is permissible, and he mentioned below it the saying of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): "O Allaah, Save Al-Waleed ibn Al-Waleed.” Also, among the Companions with this name was Al-Waleed ibn ‘Uqbah may Allaah be pleased with him."

Nevertheless, if you want to change your name because of the psychological harm that you feel, then you are permitted to change it. For more benefit on the conditions of naming children and the best names, please refer to Fataawa 82724 and 87262.

As regards the name Muhsin, it may have a positive effect on your personality because in general names have an effect on the person who is named by it. It is for this reason that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) advised us to choose good names and he forbade us from naming children with bad names and he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) even changed some of them [of the bad names].

Allaah Knows best.
