Question
I'm a Christian who got pregnant by a Muslim guy. We were ok and even planned to get married even im already pregnant. But then we had a fight and suddenly he don't want to communicate with me. I think this is unfair because i did'nt do anything bad to him but he left without an explanation. Even he left me, I'm still planning to name the child after his father. Should I move on with my life or should I obliged the guy to support me at least?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Sexual relationship between a man and a woman without valid marriage is sinful and disagrees with Sharee‘ah (Islamic Law) and morality. If a woman gets pregnant from illegal sexual intercourse, the resulting child is not attributed to the fornicator/adulterer, according to the majority of scholars, as we have previously clarified in Fatwa 97254.
Based on that, as long as this man did not marry you a valid marriage, the child resulting from that pregnancy would not be attributed to him, and he is not required to support you, nor to maintain any marital obligations to you.
Indeed, you have sinned when you committed the crime of Zina (fornication/adultery), and did not protect your honor. So, you should repent to God (Allaah The Almighty), get acquainted with His real religion (of Islam), and return to Him. For further information, see Fataawa 81979, 88906 and 88051.
