Question
Is it permissible for the bride to wear a white wedding gown?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
There is nothing wrong with the bride wearing a white wedding gown, as long as she adheres to the Sharee'ah-approved dress code. That is, the dress should be modest and cover her whole body. Add to that that it should not resemble men's clothes or those of disbelieving or immoral women. The dress must not be an adornment in itself or a means of beautification. There is no religious evidence identifying a particular color for the clothes of the Muslim woman, whether a bride or otherwise. This is of course if the bride will wear the wedding gown before her non-Mahram (permanently unmarriageable) men. However, if she will wear it in a closed place before women or her Mahram men, then there is nothing wrong with wearing a decorative wedding gown. Moreover, there is no harm if she reveals parts of her body, except for the area between the navel to the knees, before other women and her Mahram men.
