The Prophet’s daily routine

Question

How would the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, schedule his daily/weekly routine so that he would balance worship time, work time, rest time, food time, etc.….?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did not have a static, unchanging routine. This is because he would have changing circumstances; he was home at times and away at others, he would go for fighting as needed and held peace treaties other times, and he would change his regular plans in case something urgent came up.

What we could say is that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, would start his day leading the companions in the Fajr prayer. Having finished the prayer, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and the companions would sit around and make supplications. Then, if any of the companions had had a dream, he would relate it to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, who would interpret it. Then, when the sun rose, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his companions would offer a two-rak’ah (unit of prayer) prayer, after which each would leave to finish what he was up to for the rest of the day.

This was the Prophet’s daily routine. He would also go to the market, where he would teach people about the religion. He would also take a nap in the afternoons. Having finished the ‘Asr prayer, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, would go home and get in touch with his wives. He used to help with household chores, as was related by ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her. He would stay home with his wife/wives until prayer, at the time of which case he would rush to the mosque as if he did not know them. As for the night prayer, at first, he used to pray it at the beginning of the night, then he started praying it in its middle, then he finally settled on praying in the last part of the night. In this regard, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:

The most beloved prayer to Allah is that of Daawood (David) may Allaah exalt his mention and the most beloved fasting to Allah is that Daawood. He used to sleep half of the night, stand in prayer the next third of the night, and sleep back the remaining sixth of the night. He also used to fast every other day. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In Ramadan, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, would exert himself in worship during the nights of Ramadan, more than he would do on normal days; he would stand all night in prayer, especially in the last ten days of the month.

At any rate, the Muslim should balance worship time, work time, rest time, wife time, children time, and whatever else, as he sees fit. In this regard, the Muslim should keep up with his duties and make sure no one’s rights are neglected.

Allah knows best.
