Love affair with a married woman is graver

Question

What is the ruling on a love affair between a married man and a married woman?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Islam does not approve any love relationship between men and non-Mahram women outside the frame of the Sharee‘ah-approved marriage. Moreover, Islam eliminates all potential means that may lead to unfavorable results when it comes to relationships between men and non-Mahram women; as it is forbidden for a male and a female to meet in seclusion, and both men and women are enjoined to lower their gaze. In fact, this proves that love relationships between men and women nowadays, outside wedlock, are impermissible. Moreover, it is graver to have a love affair with a married man or a married woman; for it bears evil repercussions, the least of which is turning a wife against her husband. Indeed, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Whoever turns a man’s wife or slave against him is not one of us.” [Abu Daawood]

Accordingly, you should break up with this married woman and repent to Allaah The Exalted of this sin.

Allaah Knows best.
