Question
Asalam o Alaikum!!! Are prayers and worship 40 years waste if we laugh during adhan?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
If someone laughs during the Athaan to mock and make fun of it, then it wastes the worship of a whole lifetime, not just forty years. This is because mocking the Athaan is considered apostasy which causes one’s worship to become worthless according to many verses. For example, Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means):
• {…And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.}[Quran 5:5]
• {… But if they had associated others with Allaah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.}[Quran 6:88]
• {And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allaah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."}[Quran 39:65]
Imaam Al-Qurtubi 
said in his Tafseer (interpretation) of the last verse: “The phrase {your work would surely become worthless} is addressed to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in particular. It was also said that it is addressed to the entire community of Muslims as Allaah knows that he [the Prophet] would never associate anything with Him in worship or commit any act of apostasy. When one’s deeds become worthless, this means that they are totally wasted. Al-Qushayri said: 'When a Muslim commits apostasy, his past worship does not avail him. However, this is true only if he dies a disbeliever. That is why Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {… And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter...}[Quran 2:217]'"
But if a person laughs during Athaan for any other reason and not to make fun of the Athaan, then this does not waste his worship, not the worship of forty years or less or more. For further benefit, please refer to Fatwa 92196.
