Question
What is the ruling on plating eyeglass frames with gold?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
There is nothing in the religion that forbids plating eyeglass frames with gold. However, it is impermissible for men to wear gold-plated glasses; only women are allowed to wear them. It is forbidden for men to use any gold or silver plated items such as eyeglasses, watches, buttons or pens, as Abu Moosa 
reported that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Gold and silk have been made lawful for the females of my Ummah (community) and unlawful for the males." [At-Tirmithi and An-Nasaa’i]
