Emergence of the Beast (Ad-Daabbah) is a sign of the Hour

Question

Is the birth of a mule one of the signs of the Hour?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We do not know that the birth of a mule is one of the signs of the Hour, but we know that the emergence of a beast (Ad-Daabbah) is one such sign. Allaah The Almighty, Says (what means):

  • {And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].} [Quran 27:82]

Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him said that this creature will appear towards the end of time when people have become corrupt and it will speak to them.

It was narrated on the authority of Huthayfah ibn Usayd Al-Ghifaari may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that one of the signs of the Hour is the appearance of Ad-Daabbah (the Beast). [Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Daawood, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah]

It was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that when the Beast appears, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before that. [Muslim, At-Tirmithi and Ahmad]

It was also narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that the Beast would appear in the forenoon. [Muslim, Abu Daawood, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad]

We do not know whether this beast or creature will have the same shape as a mule as there are no Hadeeths directly attributable to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in this regard. However, there are traditions that were narrated by the righteous predecessors. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him said that the Beast would be of all different colors and there would be a great distance between its horns. [Ibn Abi Haatim]

It was also narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, said that it will be like a huge spear. [Ibn Abi Haatim]. It was mentioned that ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib may Allaah be pleased with him said that this creature would have feathers, yellow locks of hair, hooves, and a beard, but it would not have a tail. [Ibn Abi Haatim]

It was narrated that Ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, said that this beast would have the head of a bull, the eyes of a pig, the ears of an elephant, the horn of a camel, the neck of an ostrich, the chest of a lion, the color of a tiger, the waist of a cat, the tail of a ram, and the legs of a camel, and that there would be a distance of twelve Thiraa’ (about 6 meters) between every two joints. Ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, added that it would have the staff of Moosa (Moses), and the ring of Sulaymaan (Solomon), may Allaah exalt their mention. He went on to describe that when it appears, every disbeliever will receive a black seal with the ring of Sulaymaan may Allaah exalt his mention then this black sign would spread all over the disbeliever's face, so that people will say in the marketplace, “Disbeliever, how much does this cost,” or, “Believer, how much does this cost?” He elaborated, saying that the members of one family would sit at their dinner table and recognize who of them is a believer and who is not. Ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, finally said that the Beast would tell each one whether they would be among the dwellers of Hell or the dwellers of Paradise. [Ibn Abi Haatim]

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

  • {And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].} [Quran 27:82]

Allaah Knows best.
