Magic spells and their treatment

Question

I know that one of my relatives is suffering from psychological problems that affect his life and relationship with his children and wife. A Shaykh said that he was under the effect of a spell. What should I do? What is the opinion of the Sharee'ah in this regard?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Magic spells have real effects on people. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {They cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allaah} [Quran 2:102]

It was narrated on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her that a spell was cast on the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that caused him to imagine that he had sexual intercourse with his wives while he did not. [Al- Bukhari]

If you are sure that your relative is affected by a spell, you should endeavor to treat him, as the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, ordered us to benefit our fellow Muslims if we can. [Muslim] In another Hadeeth (narration), the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that Allaah The Almighty would help a slave so long as he helps his Muslim brother. [Muslim]

Allaah Knows best.
