What is the Sharee‘ah ruling on talking while one is relieving himself in the toilet?

Accepted Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Unnecessary talking while one is relieving himself is disliked. The Shaafi‘i scholar Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami said: "Talking while one is relieving himself, even with something other than remembrance of Allaah or responding to a greeting, is disliked due to the relevant forbiddance. If one sneezes, he has to praise Allaah in his heart, just like one who is engaged in sexual intercourse. If one made a sound that he himself cannot hear, this is not disliked."
