A wife is not to be blamed if she wakes her husband up and he refuses

Question

Would I be considered a sinner if I do not wake up my husband to perform the Fajr prayer? I try with much effort to wake him up for about fifteen minutes but he does not awaken easily and I need to go back to sleep, given that I use all possible means to wake him up but to no avail. Thanks.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

May Allaah The Almighty Reward you for your eagerness in tending to your family and your husband and Help you to exert greater efforts in the future. You should know that there is no blame on you as long as you strive and do your best in order to wake your husband up for the Fajr prayer, even if he does not wake up. However, you should warn him against the gravity of neglecting the Fajr prayer, which is one of the most important prayers. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "If they knew (the blessings and rewards) in store (for them for performing) the Fajr and ‘Ishaa' prayers, they would have come to them even if they had to crawl." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

One should utilize all available means to accomplish his objectives. Your husband should make full use of all available means and take due precautions to help him perform the five obligatory prayers in their due times. As for the Fajr prayer, this can be achieved by observing the following tips:

1- Going to sleep early.

2- Using an alarm clock.

3- Going to sleep having the sincere intention to wake up to perform the Fajr prayer in its due time.

4- Going to sleep in a state of ablution.

5- Reciting the Athkaar before sleeping such as Tasbeeh (i.e. saying Subhaan Allaah: Allaah is free from any imperfection) and the like.

Moreover, your husband should repent to Allaah The Exalted from such blameworthy negligence and laxness in performing the Fajr prayer by attending the congregational prayer at the mosque while resolving never to neglect it again in the future.

Allaah Knows best.
