Abandoning the Sunnah acts in Wudhoo’

Question

Is it permissible to wash the organs of Wudhoo’ (ablution) only once? Is Wudhoo’ valid when one deliberately abandons the Sunnah acts without a Sharee‘ah-approved justification?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is permissible that one washes the organs of Wudhoo’ only one time, based on the Hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with them in which he said: "The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, performed Wudhoo’ washing his organs only one time." [Al-Bukhari]

In principle, the Sunnah acts of Wudhoo’ should not be deliberately abandoned. Nevertheless, abandoning such acts does not render Wudhoo’ invalid. A Muslim, however, should be keen to perform Wudhoo’ in the same way the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to do most of the time, by washing his organs thrice and doing the relevant recommended acts.

Allaah Knows best.
