Ruling on Skin Pigmentation to Cover Effects of Vitiligo

Question

I am a young girl and have vitiligo with patches on different parts of my body. I used to wear makeup and use creams to conceal the spots in areas that are highly prominent because I cannot bear people staring. I am highly sensitive about this issue as it causes me enormous psychological pressure. This has negatively impacted my social life, and I have grown more introvert and unsociable even with my own family. I am now twenty-two years of age and am old enough to get married. I heard news that revived my hope, which is that special makeup has been developed that can permanently hide vitiligo spots in body parts that are highly prominent. It lasts for years and then fades away and the skin returns to its previous state. My question is: is it permissible to wear such makeup? Is it considered like tattooing, especially because it is said that special instruments are used to implant these colors into the skin?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

This surgical procedure is classified as cosmetic surgery. Apparently, it is considered among the permissible cosmetic surgeries because its purpose is not to enhance beauty but to remove a defect that disfigures the original physical structure. Removing this kind of defect is permissible in Islam since it is a form of treatment. It is not considered a tattoo because the application of a tattoo is not for removing a defect but to enhance one's beauty. The fact that the procedure is done with special instruments does not affect its religious ruling as long as it does not incur harm or lead to another impermissible matter.

Allah knows best.
