Assalaamu alaykum. I would like to know the authenticity of the following hadith:
Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported, “The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, supplicated Allah in Masjid Al-Fath (in Al-Madeenah) on a Monday, a Tuesday, and a Wednesday. His supplication was accepted between the Thuhr and the ‘Asr on the Wednesday. Whenever I had a need, I would wait for that moment on a Wednesday and then supplicate. Every time I did so, I noticed that my supplication would be accepted.” (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad of Imam Al-Bukhaari, hadith: 725, Musnad Ahmad, vol.3 pg. 332 and Musnad Bazzar; Kashf Al-Astar, hadith: 431). May Allah reward you.
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
This hadeeth was reported by Imaam Ahmad in Al-Musnad and by Imaam Al-Bukhaari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad.
Shaykh Shu‘ayb Al-Arna‘oot said about it, “Its chain of narrators is weak because Katheer ibn Zayd is not strong, especially if his narration is not narrated by anybody else. He is the only one who narrated this hadeeth from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abd Ar-Rahmaan ibn Ka‘b, and the latter is classified among the unknown narrators.”
This hadeeth was classified by Al-Albaani as good. Al-Munthiri said about it in At-Targheeb, “The chain of narration reported by Ahmad is good.”
Besides, Al-Haythami said in Al-Majma', “It was reported by Ahmad and Al-Bazzaar, and the men [narrators] of Ahmad are trustworthy.”
Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah said:
“The chain of narrators of this hadeeth includes Katheer ibn Zayd, who was criticized by the scholars; Ibn Ma‘een sometimes authenticates him and at some other times classifies him as weak. Some of our companions [scholars of our Mathhab] act according to this hadeeth, as well as some other scholars, and so they seek to supplicate at that place, as narrated from Jaabir; however, it was not narrated that Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, sought to supplicate at that particular place; rather, it was at that particular time.”
Allah knows best.
