As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Is it permissible for an individual to live in a property, where he must legally pay rent, and knowing this, he does not do so. BaarakAllaahu feekum.

Accepted Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for a tenant to refrain from paying the rent that is due or to procrastinate in paying it while he is capable. Rather, he is obliged to pay the rent in fulfillment of the contract that he has with the lessor, whether the lessor is the government or others, because Allah Says (what means): {O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.} [Quran 5:1]
