Belief in Allaah and the human mind

Question

I want an article on the mind's role regarding belief in Allaah.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mind is a light that Allaah The Almighty honored man with, whereby He distinguishes him from the rest of His creatures, like animals and inanimate objects.

Allaah The Almighty has obligated humans with religious assignments because He granted him a mind. With his mind, man distinguishes between good and evil, guidance and misguidance and right and the wrong. The mind can guide man to find the way of goodness and faith. Nevertheless, he can never depend solely on his mind, no matter how smart he is, and disregard Divine revelation and the Prophets' guidance, which show him the right path and provide him with knowledge. Allaah The Almighty Said (what means): {And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom?} [Quran 6:122].

Many Quranic verses urge man to think and use his mind to attain firm belief and certainty that no one is truly worthy of worship but Allaah The Almighty, with Whom there is no partner in actions, names or attributes, and there is no one worthy of worship but He. Also, man is to firmly believe that what has been revealed to the prophets of Allaah is just and what they conveyed is true.

If a sane man contemplates the following Quranic verses he will certainly realize that he must ponder and think of himself and the universe around him. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

{O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky rain} [Quran 2:21-22].

{So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected; emerging from between the backbone and the ribs. Indeed, Allaah, to return him [to life], is Able.} [Quran 86:5-8]

You can hardly open a page of the noble Quran without finding a frank invitation for the use of one's mind and pondering over oneself and the universe. Accordingly, one will reach, establish in his mind and call for the ultimate truth, which is belief in Allaah The Almighty and in the Last Day. Therefore, the mind's role in instilling belief in Allaah The Almighty is indispensable.

Allaah Knows best.
