Obligations that a Muslim Has Toward Allah

Question

What are all of the obligations that a Muslim has toward Allaah? Other than the 5 pillars of Islam. What is required of a Muslim?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that none is worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

All the acts whose abandoning incurs sinfulness fall into the category of religious obligations, such as dutifulness to parents, maintaining ties of kinship, truthfulness in speech, fulfilling trusts, some cases of enjoining good and forbidding evil, and others. Similarly, all the acts whose committing incurs sinfulness, then abandoning them falls into the category of religious obligations as well, such as abandoning killing, unlawful sexual intercourse, consuming Riba (usurious interest), witchcraft, devouring orphans’ wealth, consuming alcohol, eating the flesh of dead animals or pork or any other forbidden food, cheating, oppressing people, arrogance, conceit, etc., in addition to abandoning the opposites of the obligations listed above, such as undutifulness to parents, severing ties of kinship, lying, betrayal of trust, and neglecting the obligatory cases of enjoining good and forbidding evil.

These are just few examples, as there is no room to list all the religious obligations. In general, it is sufficient for the Muslim to fulfil the religious commands that he has knowledge of, while having the intention of complying with what he lacks knowledge of once he comes to know about it. This is in addition to seeking religious knowledge through which he can learn the commands of the Sharee’ah and its boundaries.

Allah Knows best.
