Question
I have been experiencing the sensation as if I am having intercourse while sleeping for about a year now and am confused. Note that I am unmarried and religiously committed. I recite thikr (remembrance of Allah) before going to bed and seek refuge in Allah, the Exalted, from Satan. Is this a satanic possession or what? How can I get rid of it?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
What the questioner is experiencing when asleep is apparently a dream, or a wet dream to be more accurate. Women experience wet dreams just as men do. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was asked, “Do women experience wet dreams?” He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, replied in the affirmative. [Al-Bukhari]
Experiencing wet dreams means dreaming of having sexual intercourse. A person will not be held accountable for experiencing wet dreams because this is beyond his choice and control. However, if the questioner is experiencing this before sleeping, then we cannot be sure whether it is a satanic possession or a psychological disorder. Trustworthy specialists should be consulted in order to comprehensively study the case in detail, give a correct diagnosis, and prescribe an optimal remedy for such a case. We have consulted some trustworthy psychiatrists who advised that much information and details are needed from the questioner. The prognosis was that this is normal in an otherwise nervous and tense person who lives in an environment that accepts the interpretation of such cases as a satanic possession. He advised the questioner to consult a psychiatrist in order to set a plan for her treatment.
We remind the dear questioner that Allah, the Exalted, has not created a disease except that He created a remedy for it. You should expect relief from this problem from Allah, the Exalted, soon. As long as you observe the remembrance of Allah, He will bless you with a way out of your problems and relieve you of your distress. We would like to emphasize that you are not liable to anything and bear no sin for what you are experiencing because it is beyond your control. We ask Allah Almighty to relieve you of your burden and distress and bless you with recovery.
