Question
Is the rock that is in Jerusalem floating on air? Are there any authentic Ahadeeth reported from the Messenger, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, regarding it?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The Rock that is in Jerusalem is not hanging between the sky and the earth. Al-Aloosi 
when commenting on Soorah of Al-Israa’, said in Tafseer Rooh Al-Ma‘ani:
Amongst the famous lies is that which suggests that when the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, wanted to ascend to heaven he ascended on the Rock of Jerusalem and mounted Al-Buraq, and thus the Rock moved and raised high to catch up with him, but the angel caught it. On one part of it, there is a trace of the foot of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and on the other part there is a trace of the fingers of the angels, may Allaah exalt their mention. Thus, it is floating in the air. It is cut from all directions, and no one holds it except the One Who holds the heaven to prevent it from falling on earth.
Ibn Al-Qayyim said in Naqd Al-Manqool, “Every Hadeeth regarding the Rock is a fabricated lie.”
Moreover, reality refutes the claim that it is hanging between the sky and the earth. Simply because, if this was the case, then people would clearly see it, for this cannot be hidden.
