Use of Ceramic in Dental Restorations

Question

Is it permissible to use ceramic in dental restorations for cosmetic purposes?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There are two kinds of cosmetic procedures:

1. Those that are done to correct birth deformities or to restore a person's appearance back to normal (after an accident). There is no harm in this type of cosmetic procedure, and the scholars depended on the fact that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, gave permission to a man whose nose had been cut off in a battle to wear a prosthetic nose made of gold.

2. Those that are unnecessary and are not done to remove a deformity but rather to enhance beauty. This is forbidden because the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “Allah cursed women who tattoo or have tattoos, those who pluck eyebrows or have them plucked, and those who change the creation of Allah, the Exalted.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Hence, it is impermissible to install dental restorations with ceramic or any other material for cosmetic purposes because this constitutes changing the creation of Allah, the Exalted, in order to enhance beauty.

Allah knows best.
