Reciting Al-Fatihah after the Marriage Contract as Part of Supplication

Question

Assalam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu I have a doubt in many marriage I seen that when dua is over imam says "surah fateha"then everyone will start reciting surah fateha is this sunnah or bidah kindly answer pls may allah bless you

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Appointing a specific surah to be recited at a specific time or occasion, and treating that as an act of worship, requires evidence from Islamic law. There is no authentic report from the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, or his Companions that they would recite Surah Al-Fatihah after concluding a marriage contract.

Accordingly, reciting Al-Fatihah—either individually or collectively—after the marriage contract as part of a supplication is considered a religious innovation and bidʿah idāfiyyah.(Bidʿah idāfiyyah refers to introducing a new practice into worship that resembles established acts of devotion but lacks any specific evidence from the Qur’an, Sunnah, or practice of the early generations)

What is prescribed after the contract is completed is duʿā. Abu Dawood may Allaah have mercy upon him and others narrated from Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him that “When the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, would congratulate someone on marriage, he would say: ‘May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.’

Similarly, Imam An-Nawawī may Allaah have mercy upon him said in ar-Rawḍah: “It is recommended to supplicate for the couple after the contract, saying: ‘May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and unite you in goodness.’

Allah knows best.
