Meaning of bewitchment and its cure

Question

What is bewitchment and how can it be cured by the Quran? Is it permissible to use recipes on which the Quran has been recited? What are they?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

According to scholars bewitchment involves the use of talismans, charms and knots which a magician uses through the devils to affect the hearts and bodies in a certain way that causes diseases, death and separation.

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Haroot and Maroot. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allaah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew. And if they had believed and feared Allaah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.}[Quran 2:102-103]

A bewitched person can be effectively cured with Ruqyah (healing with the Quran) by reciting verses from the Quran and following the Sunnah (tradition). The Quran is an effective cure for anyone who believes in it. Among the chapters and verses of great effectiveness when regularly read are:

• Soorah Al-Faatihah

• Ayat Al-Kursi [Quran 2:255]

• Soorah Al-Ikhlaas

• Soorah Al-Falaq

• Soorah An-Naas

• Soorah Al-Baqarah [verses: 285-286]

It is permissible for a bewitched person to have another person perform Ruqyah for them. Treatment of bewitchment can be effected through supplication to Allaah The Almighty and seeking His help, reciting definite supplications and Athkaar (remembrance) narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. This includes the morning and evening Athkaar. This is the best manner with which a person can secure himself from envy, possession, Jinn and the evil eye.

Recipes of lawful herbs, drugs and oil are permissible as a medication for bewitchment, and it is permissible to recite Quran and Athkaar on them.

Signs of bewitchment may be epilepsy, unusual mood swings or unusual behavior.

And Allaah Knows best.
