The muezzins of the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam

Question

Who were the muezzins of the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It was narrated on the authority of ‘A’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her that she said, “The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had three muezzins: Bilal, Abu Mahthoorah and ‘Amr ibn Umm Maktoom.” [Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh, Al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan and Ibn Sa‘d in At-Tabaqat].

Al-Bayhaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him said that this hadith is authentic.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had a fourth muezzin whose name was Sa‘d Al-Qarath, and he used to call the azan in the mosque of Quba’, as mentioned in a hadith narrated by Al-Hakim may Allaah have mercy upon him.

These muezzins were also mentioned by Ibn Al-Qayyim, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Hajar, Al-Kittani, Ath-Thahabi and Ash-Shirwani may Allaah have mercy upon them.

The correct report about them is that of Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him as he said in Al-Fat-h, “The regular muezzin was Bilal. Ibn Umm Maktoom used to call the azan of the Fajr while Sa‘d Al-Qarath was the muezzin of the Quba’ mosque. Abu Mahthoorah was in Makkah.

There is a hadith stating that ‘Abdullah ibn Zayd may Allaah be pleased with him once called the iqamah upon the order of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. [Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Abu Ash-Shaykh and Al-Bayhaqi] The soundness of the isnad (chain of narration) of this hadith, however, is questionable, as it was rendered weak by Ibn Hajar, Ash-Shawkani, Al-Albani and Al-Arna’oot.

Allah knows best.
