A woman has to veil her face at times of Fitnah

Question

The main scholars have agreed that it is obligatory for women to veil their faces if there is fear of Fitnah (temptation); what is the meaning of Fitnah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Fitnah in this context means temptation, which occurs when the woman possesses beauty and is attractive in such a way that men will be attached to her or she is a source of temptation for men who see her. Moreover, it could mean that the woman herself might be tempted due to the prevalence of people of bad moral character, corruption, lack of shame, and religiosity. If the woman fears being tempted or tempting others, she is obliged to veil her face and hands.

Allaah Knows best.
