When it is not permissible to share one sacrificial animal

Question

Is it permissible for a married couple to jointly purchase a sacrificial animal?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

A ewe is not sufficient as a sacrificial animal for two or more persons. A she-camel or a cow, on the other hand, suffices up to seven persons, and it is not permissible for two persons to share one seventh, which is equivalent to a ewe. It is impermissible for more than one person to share in the price of a sacrificial animal so that it acts as a sacrificial animal for both of them. However, if a person offers a sacrificial animal on his own expense and includes the members of his household (in its reward), this is valid.

Accordingly, a husband may make his wife a partner in the reward of the sacrificial animal that he offers from his own money, but it is not valid to share in the price of a single sacrifice intending thereby to offer it on behalf of both of them.

Allaah Knows best.
