Question
Is it permissible to chat with atheists (online), may Allah, the Exalted, guard us (against atheism), and discuss the idea of creation and existence with them?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Generally, debating and calling atheists to worship Allah Almighty is allowed and a good approach; ease and leniency should be adopted with them. Allah Almighty says (what means): {Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.} [Quran 16:125]
The same ruling applies to oral or written invitations via the internet or other media. However, below are important notes that should be observed:
Firstly, one who concerns himself with debating people of falsehood should have deep knowledge with which he can refute the allegations presented to him. Otherwise, it is obligatory to avoid debating them.
Secondly, it is more appropriate that a man invites men and a woman invites women, while there is nothing wrong, Allah willing, if a woman invites men or a man invites women, as long as Islamic guidelines are observed.
