Saying the Qunoot Du'aa

Question

I would like to ask if it is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allaho Alaihi Wa Salam) to say Duaa' Alqunoot with the same rhythm and tajweed as he used to recite the Qur'an? If it is Sunnah, please provide the authentic Hadith that states so. If it is not, why do some Imams do that especially in Ramadan?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Dear brother, it is Sunnah to make the Du'aa (supplication) after completing the recitation of the Holy Quran whether it is in Ramadan or any other month since the Du'aa is more probable to be answered in such times. Anas may Allaah be pleased with him used to gather his family after completing the recitation of the Holy Quran, and then, make the Du'aa and his family members follow him and say “Ameen”.

The Salaf (righteous predecessors) also used to make the Du'aa after completing the recitation of the Quran during Ramadan. Imam Ahmad and others witnessed this. But it is more desirable to make the Du'aa in the Witr prayer, i.e. the Qunoot supplication, after returning to standing from Rukoo’ (bowing down) as this is a time and place of making the Du'aa. The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to say during the Qunoot (O My Lord! I seek your protection by doing what pleases you and avoiding what can make you angry…..). Again, one can say in the Qunoot: (O My Lord! Give us enough of your fear that will prevent us from committing any sins …), narrated by At-Tirmithi. Al-Hassan Ibn Ali said that the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) taught him these words to say during the Qunoot: “O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided. Grant me safety among those whom You have granted safety. Take me into Your charge among those whom You have taken into Your charge. Bless me in what You have given me. Protect me from the evil that You have decreed, for You decree and nothing is decreed for You. And there is no humiliation for whom You take as a ward. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.

The Du'aa should be said with an impressive voice without raising the voice too much or reading the Du'aa as if it were the Quran. In the Du'aa, one should take into consideration the needs of the Muslims. Also, one has to choose comprehensive words for the Du'aa. Finally, it is desirable to make the Du'aa of completing the recitation of the Holy Quran in the Qunoot of the Witr prayer.

Allah knows best.
