Acquaintance of Muslim girl wants to meet her parents to ask permission for marriage Fatwa No: 81818
- Fatwa Date:29-2-2000 - Thul-Qi'dah 25, 1420
I am a 22 year-old Muslim girl who practices her religion very well. A few months ago, I met a brother in Egypt, my country, where we discussed life in Canada, Egypt and Islam in both places. I told my mother of this as I don't keep anything from her. Soon, the brother and I found that we had a lot in common; we think the same way and have similar values. The brother told me that he would like to meet my parents when we visit Egypt in the summer and ask for my hand in marriage. He asked to speak to my father on the phone before we visit to make his intentions clear. I would like to know if it is okay for this brother to meet with my parents.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
There is no objection regarding the meeting of this young man with your parents to get introduced to each other and to explain his intention to them.
However, it was better for you since you are a religious girl not to talk with non-Mahram men because a man should not talk with a woman except in case of necessity and their talk should abide by Islamic conditions.
Allah knows best.
