Praying the Obligatory Prayer alone without Iqaamah

Question

Can I offer Fard (compulsory) Salah alone without saying Iqamat? What is the ruling regarding such Iqamat? Is it compulsory (Fard) to say it when one is praying alone? Is the Salah invalid if I don't say it? Please reply in the light of Qur'an and Sunnah.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Iqaamah is a recommended Sunnah. The Prayer can be performed without it, but it is disliked as it is an Islamic ritual. Some scholars are even of the view that the Muslim should not leave it and if he leaves it, he does something wrong. But performing it does not reach the level of obligation. The evidence for this is the Hadeeth of the man who did an invalid Prayer and the Prophet told him how to perform the Prayer. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did not tell him to call the Athaan or the Iqamah although he taught him in detail what to do when praying. He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) started by telling him to perform ablution and direct his face to the Qiblah but he did not mention the Athaan or the Iqaamah. So, it is not an obligation, but it is highly recommended by the Sharee’ah.
