Mistakenly Changed Recitation of the Iqaamah

Question

About a month ago while reciting Iqama during my Salat I interchanged the position of Hayya Alal Salah with Hayya Alal Falah and vice versa. For about a month, I did not realize my mistake. What is the condition of my prayers?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mistake you did does not affect the validity of the prayer. In fact, the prayer can be performed without the Iqaamah [i.e. the call to establish the prayer]. But the Iqaamah is a desirable act for any obligatory prayer, whether the person prays alone or in congregation.

However, in congregational prayer, it is recommended to call the Iqaamah. The Sunnah is that the person who calls the Aathaan (call to the prayer) is also the one who should call the Iqaamah. The evidence that the Iqaamah is not obligatory is that al-Athram narrated from 'Alqamah and al-Aswad who said: “We visited Ibn Mas’ood and he led us in prayer without the Aathaan or the Iqaamah.

Allah knows best.
