Believes she has supernatural powers

Question

I know that "hasad" is a big, and sometimes fatal mistake that could be done against human being. I never wish bad to anyone, but I do have this power of "hasad" and it has harmed people. And I cannot help stopping it. It can even happen to my own self. I will go crazy and don't know what to do. I have prayed God and read "Surah Ya-Seen" on some water and washed my head and asked God to push this hasad powers away off me. Then, I had this power coming again and I did "hasad" to my aunt and she is suffering from it now. And I just feel guilty all the time and have no idea what to do, I pray and pray and keep praying. I am a kind of person with some telepathy powers. I am afraid, this hasad thing is due to these telepathy charges of mine. I don't know. Tell me what to do to stop this "hasad' of mine and also pray God with me to save my aunt from my hasad...and also to save another lady that I have also did "hasad" to her. I am praying God, she is fine so far but I am so terrified. So please pray God with me to save everyone and save me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Envy is a dangerous disease and it is one of the causes that lead to Hellfire; we seek refuge in Allaah from that. However, there are some matters which help a Muslim avoid envy and be characterized by the characteristics of the believers, which are as follows:

1. To realize that every thing that happens is decreed by Allaah, and that it takes place with His Power and Determination. Indeed the provision that Allaah wants to give, no niggardly person can hasten its arrival, and no envier can increase or decrease it, therefore there is no need for envy.

2. To know that when the envier hates the blessing that Allaah has bestowed on the envied person, and wishes that this blessing vanishes from him, he is objecting to the Decree and Determination of Allaah. Realizing this inherits the envier the fear of Allaah, The Most High, if he/she wants to fear Allaah.

3. To keep oneself busy with his own self and manage his own affairs. The envier must also try to spend in charity and be kind to other people. Being kind to others and being jealous are two contradictory things.

4. To know that envy is a fire that burns one's heart before the other person is affected with envy. Envy is an evidence that the nature of the person is corrupt.

5. To supplicate Allaah as much as possible and implore Him earnestly in secret and openly in order to repel this chronic disease from the person.

The above are some matters that help the envier stay away from this evil quality.

As regards, the envied, he has to repel the evil of the ill-wisher with the following ten means. These were stated by Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him and we will summarize them as follows:

1. To seek refuge, help and protection in Allaah from the evil of the ill-wisher. Allaah says (what means): {…and from the evil of the envied when he envies}[Quran 113:5].

2. To fear Allaah, the Most-High. Whoever fears Allaah, Allaah will protect him.

3. To be patient about the ill-wisher, Allaah says (what means): {But if you remain patient and become pious, not the least harm will their cunning do to you.}[Quran 3:120].

4. To rely on Allaah in everything; this is one of the most important reasons in repelling the evil of the envier, as Allaah says (what means): {...and whosever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him,}[Quran 65:3].

5. To ignore and forget the envier. One should not give him (envier) importance or fear him.

6. To turn and repent to Allaah, and put in one's heart the love of Allaah and repentance instead of desires.

7. To sincerely repent to Allaah from sins and remember that the envy that befalls a person is because of his own sins. Allaah says (what means): {And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have done}[Quran 42:30].

8. To spend in charity and be kind to other people; this repels the envy of the envier. Experience proves this.

9. To be kind to the envier: Allaah says (what means): {Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and there upon, the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].}[Quran 41:34-35].

10. To purify and perfect the Oneness of Allaah in one's heart, and instead of thinking about the reasons, one should think about Allaah, the All-Mighty, the Wise, Who causes these things to happen.

This is our advice regarding this question to save oneself from the disease of envy and save the people harmed by envy.

It is very important that when one sees something he likes, to say "Tabaaraka Allaah" (May Allaah bless) or "Maashaa' Allaah, Laa Quwwata illaa Billaah'' (That which Allaah wills, Will come to pass, there is no power but with Allaah”. However, if the envier is convinced that he harmed a specific person with an evil eye, then he has to perform Ghusl and give the water to the person who is affected by an evil eye as confirmed by the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). The details of how to give a washing for a victim of an evil eye could be found in Fatwa: 82648 and 85883.

Allaah Knows best.
