Question

What is Al-Falaah? What is the meaning of Al-Falaah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The Arabic word Al-Falaah means to succeed in what is desirable and be saved from what is dreadful. The great and outstanding scholar Shaykh As-Sa'di may Allaah have mercy upon him interpreted the Saying of Allaah (which means): {They are on (true) guidance from their Lord and they are the successful.}[Quran 2:5], by saying: 'Al-Falaah means succeeding in what is desired and wished for, and be saved form what is dreadful.' Moreover, Ibn Al-Manthoor may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'Al-Falaah means success and salvation.'

Al-Falaah could also refer to As-Suhoor, which is the pre-dawn meal one eats when intending to fast. Abu Tharr may Allaah be pleased with him said in a long narration: '…until we were afraid that it was too late for Al-Falaah and when he was asked: “What is Al-Falaah?, he replied: ''As-Suhoor.'

As-Suhoor was called Al-Falaah because among the meanings of Al-Falaah is continuity and endurance, so As-Suhoor is a reason for the continuity and endurance of fasting and strengthens the person to fast without difficulty.

Allaah Knows best.
